Doubling a side multiplies volume by 8 but surface only by 4 — the reason large bodies retain heat and small ones lose it.

- V
- Volume — space enclosed by the cube
- SA
- Surface area — sum of all six square faces
- a
- Edge length — all 12 edges are equal
- d
- Space diagonal — corner to opposite corner, through the interior
- f
- Face diagonal — corner to corner across one face
- E
- Total edge length — sum of all 12 edges

The cube is the only Platonic solid whose volume and surface area are both simple powers of the edge length. That's also why the square-cube law is cleanest to see here: double the edge and surface quadruples while volume grows eight-fold — the same reason larger animals need fewer calories per kilogram than small ones.
