Side (a) Volume Surface area Space diagonal SA : V Volume growth
Enter a side length to see the comparison.

Doubling a side multiplies volume by 8 but surface only by 4 — the reason large bodies retain heat and small ones lose it.

Formula

V =   SA = 6a²   d = a√3   f = a√2   E = 12a
V
Volume — space enclosed by the cube
SA
Surface area — sum of all six square faces
a
Edge length — all 12 edges are equal
d
Space diagonal — corner to opposite corner, through the interior
f
Face diagonal — corner to corner across one face
E
Total edge length — sum of all 12 edges
Worked example — your numbers
  1. a =
  2. Volume = a³ =
  3. Surface area = 6a² =
  4. Space diagonal = a√3 =
  5. Face diagonal = a√2 =
  6. Total edge length = 12a =

The cube is the only Platonic solid whose volume and surface area are both simple powers of the edge length. That's also why the square-cube law is cleanest to see here: double the edge and surface quadruples while volume grows eight-fold — the same reason larger animals need fewer calories per kilogram than small ones.
