How shoe-size conversion works

There's no single global standard — each region measures something slightly different. The short version:

JP / CM
Foot length in centimetres. The most honest system: JP 27 ≈ 27 cm foot.
EU (Paris Point)
Based on last length (the shoe form, ~1.5 cm longer than the foot) measured in ⅔-cm units. EU ≈ (foot cm + 1.5) × 1.5.
US
Based on last length in barleycorns (1/3 inch). Men's and women's grids differ by roughly 1.5 sizes.
UK
Same barleycorn system as US but with a different zero point — UK runs about 0.5 smaller than US men's.
CN
Mondopoint-derived; in practice tracks EU closely for adult footwear.

Half-size increments exist in US/UK/CM, but EU grids skip irregularly (e.g. 41 → 41.5 → 42, but 44 → 44.5 jumps to 45). That's why a rounded target occasionally lands on the same EU size as the one above or below.

Common shoe-sizing questions

Is men's EU 42 the same as women's EU 42?

No. Despite the same number, women's EU 42 is a physically larger shoe than men's EU 42 in most brands — women's grids are offset ~1.5 US sizes from men's. Pick the right gender at the top of this tool before converting.

Why do my Nikes fit differently than my Adidas?

Brands use different lasts (the wooden or plastic form a shoe is built around). Even at the same stated size, Nike's last is typically narrower and ~0.5 size shorter than Adidas'. The brand fit guide on the right shows the common-case adjustment.

Should I size up for running shoes?

Usually yes — half a size up is a common rule of thumb. Feet swell during runs, and a tight toebox causes black toenails. Measure your foot late in the day (when swollen) and add ~1 cm of toe room.

What does "D" or "EE" width mean?

US width codes. Men's standard is D, women's standard is B. EE (also written 2E) is wide; EEEE (4E) is extra-wide. If a size feels short across the ball of your foot rather than at the toe, you need a wider last, not a longer size.

Can I trust Amazon/eBay size conversions?

Often they're off by half a size, especially between UK and US men's. Verify with the brand's official chart and with at least one buyer review that mentions fit before ordering.
